It’s the lowest stakes of fandom, I suspect. During the highest stakes of sport, for sure. Which is why it’s wildly fun and also wildly rewarding, too.

I grew up always cheering for the Brazillian soccer team. Not because I’m Brazillian but because the US team has always been pretty bad and my dad was born in Brazil so I had an loose excuse to actually cheer for them. But to Shea’s point, it doesn’t really matter. In terms of where my ancestors are from, I could cheer for Poland, Germany, Ireland, or Ukraine. It’s a mixed bag but that’s what makes the World Cup so much fun.
