I went to see the new Tarantino film The Hateful Eight last night as part of the 70mm Roadshow and it was an absolutely glorious production. The entire experience of seeing this film was something else altogether. It starts off with a brief overture, what you’d expect from a stage production, and even has an intermission, which was appreciated considering this 70mm cut was over 3 hours long.
My initial thoughts coming out of the film were “That was amazing,” as well as “That was amazingly long.” However, the length isn’t a problem; it’s a feature. There aren’t many directors (or writers) that can keep you captivated in such a long movie through moments in a film that take their time like they do in this film. As a matter of fact, this film might do this more than any of his previous films.
Getting to watch the below conversation between Quentin Tarantino and P.T. Anderson about 70mm film and the experience of it after seeing The Hateful Eight was educational. I’m no expert but there is something about the experience of seeing this movie in 70mm, as well as the long cut, with overture and intermission that makes this one of the best experiences I’ve had with a movie in a long time.
