✖︎Things can always change and nothing is set in stone obviously, but it sounds as if the Lakers have already made their decision and now Redick is hard at work putting together the right staff for this job.
I hope I’m wrong, but I think this is going to go down as one of the worst coaching hires. There are so many good ex-player candidates who have gone through the ringer for a chance (Dudley, Cassell), but JJ spends two years on TV and is going to land one of the biggest jobs in the league? And while they might have a podcast together now, I don’t see the LeBron/JJ dynamic working, especially as JJ is a first time HC.

✖︎A fun, satirical, science-y short story from foofaraw contributor, Joel Glover, was published in Nature. How cool.

✖︎I don’t game much these days, but this looks fascinating. The light aesthetic, with gameplay that feels like Final Fantasy meets Breathe of the Wild meets Pokémon Snap? Maybe even with some Mario thrown in for good measure.

✖︎While Swisher might make the occasional jabs at the “man-boys” of Silicon Valley, as she refers to them in her book, she’s desperate to be in their circles and part of the power game. She’s chosen a few CEOs to more regularly criticize now that they don’t give her the access she craves, but there are many more whose narratives she will happily help turn into the official record whenever it will help them.
Paris does not hold back on this one nor should they. If Swisher weren’t so loud about how she “calls it like she sees it” then this wouldn’t be as bad, it’d just be like every other access journalist.

✖︎“I didn’t want it to be something that was a diary; I wanted it to be a service,” she said.
I love this quote from Laura Reilly of Magasin. It’s how I think of foofaraw—providing a service (with a hint of diary). The role of the curator is all the more important with the rise of AI. So supporting those who bubble up things you dig is important to offset those robots.

✖︎Courtesy of [SIC], a new album from UYLSSA (a label..?) which I’ve never heard of before. I’m not sure how to describe it… it’s upbeat, experimental, lofi-ish? Their Bandcamp page has a ton of fun looking stuff. Toejazz.

✖︎“Powell expected to be among a crowd — but no, it was just him alone, in an empty theater. For six hours,” GQ UK reports. “Watching Tom Cruise speak directly to the camera, breaking down everything he’s learned about filmmaking over the years. According to Powell, Cruise has no intention of putting it out into the public sphere.”
“I was always a Batman guy,” Powell said. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone — it’d probably be closer to [Michael] Keaton.
While I’m sure it’s incredibly informative, sitting in a dark room alone having to listen to Tom Cruise monologue about everything he’s learned sounds excruciating. Also, I’m not a huge Powell fan, but the idea of him doing Batman more akin to Keaton is fascinating.

✖︎He warned that disintermediation and the separation of publishers from their readers was the “biggest threat” to the news industry right now but that this is why the FT is “doubling down” on its high-quality reporting and investigations.
Ridding said publishers like the FT with trusted, accurate human-made journalism could be in a strong position because “for all the hype, AI makes a lot of mistakes and falls short when facts are formed.
There’s obviously the Facebook video pivot comparison to make here where orgs relied on those big payments, increasing their value, only to have the chair pulled out from under them. It’s a double-edged sword. On the one hand, your stuff is likely getting scraped already, so yeah, insist on getting paid. On the other, any form of AI that’s just regurgitating stuff should be outlawed.

✖︎Scientists have developed a gel from whey protein that breaks down alcohol in the gut and reduces its intoxicating effects, an advance that could lead to a new way of treating hangovers.
You have my attention. Pop one of these bad boys before bed and wake up anew? Count me in.

✖︎But as fiercely as Florida Republicans oppose voting by felons, they feel entirely differently about voting for felons. That’s now apparently fine, provided the felon is Donald Trump.
This is the best line I’ve come across so far in regards to today’s guilty verdict.
30 May 2024
✖︎The verdict is only the end of one chapter in this case. No sentence will be decided until July, and Trump has said that he will appeal the decision, which will likely delay any punishment. He is eligible to run for president and serve even if convicted—and indeed even if incarcerated.
Even if we do get past the appeal and to sentencing, jail time is still highly unlikely. Probation or house arrest are the scenarios I’d expect.

✖︎AI is so cool and it’s just such a shame that 99% of the people building things with it are so unimaginative and extremely short-sighted.

✖︎I’m not sure if he’s saying his production company would put a package together for NBC or try to launch something on his own. It’d be fascinating if they went indie and did a live steam to compete with pre/half-time/post shows on networks.

✖︎I didn’t bother looking into the solutions to the AI Google stuff that were going around the web earlier this week because I figured something like this would happen soon so I don’t have to bother remembering what to append to my query or whatever.

✖︎Even when I can’t fall asleep, I love to sleep. And I don’t mean this in the Arianna Huffington way, where getting a good night’s sleep is some incredible lifehack that allows you to out-rise and out-grind the rest of humanity. No, I love to sleep because sleeping fucking ROCKS. When I’m awake, the world is bullshit. Kids scream. Traffic builds up. Countries get bombed. Truly awful shit. Then I close my eyes and POOF! It all goes away.
I both love sleep and wearing comfortable clothes. Since I work from home I rarely ever “get dressed” these days.

✖︎I really, really wish there was an industry standard for movie releases: 45 day theater window, followed by 30 days where you can rent/buy, and after that, eventually land on streaming. I think the uncertainty and studios willingness to drop some movies quickly results in less theater-goers.

✖︎The Lakers are infatuated with Redick’s potential, according to league sources, viewing him as a Pat Riley-like coaching prospect who could both help the franchise in the short term and lead it for years.
No matter how smart he seems, it’s wild to even consider a guy like Redick with zero coaching experience for one of the biggest jobs in basketball.

✖︎There was something resonant in Jokic trying, desperately, to get his shot up inside, only to see it devoured by a pack of Wolves
Denver was up 20 at home and lost. Minnesota shot 39 percent from the field and won, with its best player scoring just 16 points. That’s the magic of a Game 7.
Truly a spectacular game. I don’t think McDaniels scoring and Edwards defense, especially in the second half are getting enough credit, but obviously, the three-headed monster were incredible.
