🌊 Some Recent Discoveries Vol. 001

4 September 2019 🌊

I’ve been lazy with the weblog in recent weeks1. All of the European soccer leagues have been taking up much of my free time. England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France. I’ve been trying to take it all in and have a few Drafts of thoughts I may get around to posting. Until then, below are five things I’ve discovered recently. Not all of them are new. But they are to me. So come down the rabbit hole with me. 🐇

A Meditative Podcast About Cereal

The Empty Bowl is a podcast from Justin McElroy, of MBMBAM and Adventure Zone fame, and Dan Goubert, the creator of the cereal blog Cerealously. I just started from the beginning today, currently on episode three and find it immensely delightful. I’m neither a cereal person nor a big listener of the McElroy’s, with the exception being The McElroy Brothers Will Be In Trolls World Tour, which is just a masterclass in podcasting. The whole premise of playing soothing, meditative music behind two guys talking about cereal is a wondrous joy.

A Directory of Consumer Goods with Kick Ass Branding

I’m a sucker for good branding and CPGD.xyz is a directory devoted to cool direct-to-consumer packaged goods with excellent branding. I own a few of things I found here, and found some other things to check out in the future. I discovered Corpus Naturals deodorant from Om Malik, but it’s listed here as well and $22 for deodorant (with free shipping) sounds excessive, but it’s the only natural deodorant I’ve been able to find that works for me.

An Odd, Epix Television Show That Gets Me

If you watched and enjoyed Patriot from Amazon, you have to check out Perpetual Grace Ltd. It’s written and directed by the same guy and a lot of the same actors show up here as well. The big bummer is it’s on Epix, which no one has, but it is more than worth it to get a trial and binge through the entire season. I’m pretty sure there will be a second season too.

A Sport No One In America Watches

I got into cricket around the time of the World Cup this past summer after reading about the Indian Premier League on Om Malik’s blog2. The Indian Premier League is T20, which is vastly different than test and one day cricket3 and watching the highlights from the IPL was completely enthralling. Tonight, the Caribbean Premier League kicks off. The CPL is a T20 league, and with it being in the Caribbean, the time zones are on our side here in the US allowing cricket to be seen in the evening. It airs on Willow, which isn’t a channel many people probably have, but back when the World Cup was starting Sling TV had a deal to get the channel for $45 for a full year, no other plans or channel required.

And A Soft, Catchy Tune On The Way Out

  1. fine, you’re right, in recent months*. Thanks for making me feel bad.↩︎

  2. another mention of Om. I should probably add him back to my RSS…↩︎

  3. not in terms of rules, really, but the lower number of overs allows for a much higher paced and intense sport.↩︎
