Pointless, Epic Clickers

14 August 2015

It wasn’t that long ago that I got completely tired of playing games on my phone. Most just got boring after a while, or weren’t that fun to begin with. Recently I fell into a trap of these Clicker” games. Just hearing the premise of them sounded ridiculous to me. You essentially just click the screen to earn in-game currency. You use that currency to buy things that will help you earn the currency faster when clicking, as well as passive earnings while you are not in the game. However, there happens to be something so satisfying about leveling up that next money maker.

It all started when I had a minute at work and was flipping through the App Store. I had seen AdVenture Capitalist before but never gave it a second thought. On a whim I downloaded it. For about the next ten minutes I was entrenched trying to level up my lemonade stand and hire a manager so that I wouldn’t have to manually tap the button to turn lemons into lemonade every couple seconds, but instead watch it produce automatically.

Then you work to get the next business, a newspaper route, and then a car wash and so on and so on. Each time, working to continuously improve the business, getting upgrades, and hiring managers. Something about this game just clicked for me and held my attention unlike most other games.

After being entrenched in AdVenture Capitalist for a day, I went on a mission to find more games like it. Admittedly, having multiple games like this that need to be managed will greatly diminish my ability, and desire to maintain all of them. First, I found Bitcoin Billionaire, which was quickly deleted. After that was Make it Rain, which lasted a day but was eventually deleted as well. Then Apple featured these games on the App Store front page under Epic Clickers” and right next to AdVenture Capitalist was Tap Titans.

In a world overrun by evil Titans, it is up to you to slay them and restore peace and order. How do you do it? You must tap!

Tap to attack, tap to slay, tap to collect gold, tap to hire heroes. Tap to activate devastating skills, tap to unlock powerful auras, tap to summon mysterious artifacts. Tap to explore beautiful worlds, tap to meet helpful fairies, tap to revive heroes, tap to collect lost treasures.

I think you get the point. Tap, tap, and tap some more. There is absolutely no skill required. Yet, the simple system combined with the satisfaction of leveling up across a few different scenarios, business and fantasy games, I became completely entrenched. Passive games like this are great because you can go without playing and return to boat loads of money to level up some more. You barely even have to tap in AdVenture Capitalist once you are set up if you don’t want to. It then just becomes a game of managing, and leveling up the different businesses. It helps that both of these games are extremely well designed, nice to look at as well as free (there are in-app purchases but they are not necessary whatsoever).

I realize after awhile I will get bored with these just as I have with previous games that came before it but for now it’s exactly what I want to kill time when waiting in line for something or looking to kill a quick minute while on a long call.
